Hello, new here 👋🏻… I have a hen whose comb seems to be getting darker in color and I’m not sure if that’s normal? She has a pretty large comb that flops over. A couple weeks ago I did notice she had two black spots on it but they went away and her energy levels are still good, she’s free ranging and eating and seems normal otherwise. It did get a little cold around where I live but it hasn’t dropped below 50s and it’s actually been pretty warm this past week in the high 70s.

I am almost positive that is is lack of fresh blood (meaning blood containing oxygen) in the comb. Maybe giver her some water and see if she has something in her throat.

My 2 large combed chickens (cockerel and one of my pullets) sometimes gets purple tips. I noticed it's only in the ones with the huge combs and it's only when they're excited. I'm sure it has something to do with blood flow. I've been keeping an eye on them in case it's heart related but they're super healthy and no signs of distress.

Hmmm okay, that makes sense— I did just let them out of their run when I first saw this so she could have been excited.

No its fall, but we’ve had a weird heat wave this week and it’s been in the high 70s.
I am so sorry! I just realized that you had already said what temperature it was.... it MIGHT be that the hen is getting hot...

COLD TEMPERATURES: White tips of combs (frostbite)

You might already know this..... but if you didn't I hope this helps!
Good luck! :hugs
