quail brooder size?

Em Ty,
I guess you are right. I never thought about it that way. I guess I have a lot to learn in many areas. Of course that rain does help replenish our underground aquafer which is our main water source. What's the best way to learn more about this?

Google rainwater capture or something like that. You can start by collecting all the runoff from the roof of your house, garage, sheds, etc and storing that.

I'd focus on the quail, though, and then move on to rainwater. Having said that, I have about 12 projects on the go, lol.

EmTy,
We did collect water from the roof at one time. We weren't super successful. I'm in the process of starting 3 other breeding projects and I'm considering a few other species of birds (dove and/or pigeons).

We are a family of projects for sure. My husband has 4 or 5 of his own he's working on.

Thank You,

AZ Birds,
How are your quail doing in the heat? I'm in southern NM and it's not that hot everyday, but we do get that type of heat many times in the summer.

They need deep shade and multiple water sources in case one fails. When it gets over 95 degrees and they are already panting in the morning shallow wading pans or pools are appreciated. Unglazed terra cotta is best as the water soaks the clay and evaporates keeping the water cooler. When it's over 110 it's a must or you will see a drop in egg production at best or loose birds at worst. Once they learn the wading water will help them cool off they love getting wet and will even roll around in the shallow water like dogs.

I'm thinking out side the box here, air conditioner box that is.
Is there any way to capture the condensation off the coils?
Might not get tons of water but it all adds up???

Good luck
Jay

Jay,
The funny thing is in the desert we typically use something called a swamp cooler. To cool we actually use water to add humidity to the air. It works effectively until July when it gets more humid. So we don't actually have "real a/c" here.

But that's a good thought if we move someplace that does.

Thank You,
SuseyQ

Sill,
This is so good to know. Do you have your quail facing a particular direction? Ours will likely face west, but we will have a shade cloth on the porch so that helps cut down a bit on the intense afternoon sun and the heat. I'm thinking clay plant drip dishes would work nicely. Thanks for the great idea. Do you need the extra water to drink because of evaporation or the water temperature? I know that water left out in the heat can get to a boiling point here and actually burn your throat. I look forward to watching my birds play in the water like dogs. :) BTW since you're somewhat in my locality I was wondering if you could recommend a good hatchery or source for chicks or eggs?

Thank You,
SuseyQ

Should I get quails or pheasants?
What type of quail is best?
Can they share a pen with other fowl? (I have ducks, chickens, junglefowl, swans (I wouldn't put them with my swans) , geese, and loons.
What do they eat?
Can you get more then one type of quail in a flock?
Is 6 quail enough for a flock?
What is the male to female ratio?

Also depends on what you want them for.

Min 24% game bird ration, or 28% turkey starter (non-medicated), though some people feed them as low as 18%

Yep
What is the male to female ratio?
Anywhere from 3:1 to 6:1.

No problem. You can also find a lot of the answers you're looking for by searching the forums. The search function here is quite good.
