I plan on keeping quail indoor and I was wondering how many coturnix quail hens I would be able to keep in an XL guinea pig cage, if any, and what I would I need to keep them. Keeping them indoor is my only option, as I live in a community that is extremely restrictive towards any animals that need to live permanently outdoors. The quail would be able to spend a few hours a day outside.

All help appreciated.

A pair or a trio at the most, a hamster's cage is pretty small to keep quail in...you might consider providing some 'fake' plants so they can feel more safe. Places to hide if necessary. Enriching their environment will go a long way in providing a healthy habitat in a small confined space.

I keep buttons in guinea pig cages like this. Rule of thumb for buttons is 1 sq ft per quail, so I can have up to 6 comfortably in my cages. I'm not sure of the space requirements for cots though. I would think a trio would have plenty of room. I use corn cob bedding, it is less dusty and keeps odor down better than anything else I've tried.

:frow hi! Welcome to byc!

I understand the dimensions of that cage to be about 36" x18" x18" if thats correct then i think a trio would get on pretty well in there. I would also encourage you to buy young adult birds locally who are already sexed. If you get a male you would probly have problems. Theyll overbreed too few hens. You could easily tell the gender if they are 6 wks old. They will cost a little more at that age but you need to be sure or you will have problems. Often you can find people on your local craigslist. For only a few birds id bet theyd be willing to work with you if u make it clear your ready to spend cash. Some people might not want to come off their breeders but dont be discouraged and still be sure dont get chicks the extra males will kill eachother.
