I have a 4 fully grown quail, 3 hens, and a rooster. Their droppings usually never smelled that bad however recently it's been unbearable to the point I have no choice but to fully clean and disinfect their cage every day. I have been feeding them manna pro gamebird feed all their life, water with some acv, and some pullet size crushed oyster shells. I don't know why this is happening, their poop seems moist but it's not diarrhea, it is hard but has a liquid residue which I am assuming is what's causing the stench. I would like to know why this is happening and how I can prevent it or neutralize the odor.

Have you used a new bedding? If not, check that what you used hasn’t been changed by the manufacturer. Check the same with your feed brand. How old are the quail? If they are young, it’s not uncommon for poop to be stinkier as they mature. Are they inside or outside? How is the humidity? More humid conditions add to smell as well.

😮 I only have one quail, but his poop is practically scentless and I have had him for nearly 4 years now. I feed him Haygates Quail and Partridge Gamefeed pellets, and a blend of Wild and Domestic Finch seed mixes, a no-grow wild bird feed blend and a generic wild bird seed mix. He also has oyster shell bird grit every now and then. Lulu the Diamomd Dove eats the same food too.

They also get treats occasionally of cut vegetables, apple, pear, grape and on very rare occasions, little bits of pancake.

Are they outside? I feel like they smell worse when it is really hot outside. I put lavender and other herbs in their aviary and clean them more often.

If it's a strong ammonia smell, try getting some Iron Sulfate pills (Slow Fe, but generic is cheaper) and grinding them up. If you sprinkle over poop, it magically makes the ammonia smell go away by turning into Ammonium ferrous sulfate.

Not sure that it's good for quail, so we only use it in the poop tray itself - our quail are on wire. But it has really helped.
