I have 3 young Cinnamon Queens. Before I got them, they shared a coop with some older chickens and they always slept right at the top of the ramp, on the floor of the coop. The other chickens went to live with someone else and I acquired these 3 along with the coop. They started laying eggs about 3 weeks after I got them (which was 3 1/2 months ago). After I got them, they continued to sleep on the floor. They lay eggs every day, And initially all of them laid their eggs on the plywood floor. Only one of them now lays consistently in the nesting box. The 2nd one goes back-and-forth between the floor of the coop and the nesting box. The third one has never laid an egg in the nesting box, and that one always lays her eggs very early - before the sun is even up. And she always lays her egg wherever she is sleeping. When that was on the floor of the coop, the only problem was dirty eggs. But now she has started sleeping on the roosting bar at night, and when she lays the egg from up there, it results in an egg that’s broken on the end. Sometimes I think she’s laying her egg in her sleep! My other two hens lay eggs anywhere between 8 AM and noon, but this one has always laid an egg before sunrise. I know I could put straw down to help avoid breakage, but I wonder if it’s possible to get her to lay later in the morning. I think if she could lay later in the morning, she would go back to laying on the plywood floor or possibly learn to lay in the nesting box. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to BYC. Glad to have you here with us in this fun and poultry loving community. One possible way to help the early layer find the next box is to setup a timer with a coop light that will come on early. I did this for a pen of pullets that were dropping egg off of the roost before daylight. That really helped and within a few weeks they were using there nest box. It may also help to leave a plastic egg in the nest box to give the hens and idea this is where the best place is to lay.
