Mini rant:

Learn how to read and understand topographical maps (topo maps). Particularly if you're an avid outdoorsperson and aren't always some place with cell service or live in a rural area that may not have properly GPS mapped roads and trails. Having a topo map and knowing how to read it will help you understand the local geology/geography you need to navigate and what kinds of obstacles you may encounter. It might just be important at some point in your life.

I learned how to read topo maps when we were looking for land in WV. Very interesting skill to have and very useful!

When I hunted in Maine you had better know how to read a TOPO and Compass, which was taught way back when I was Boy Scout. I always had an interest in maps. Today we mess with the GPS. Tells us to do this and that but we know another way that is a nicer ride. TURN AROUND WHEN POSSIBLE.

Yes. Back before my Mom started using a GPS, I was her GPS. I love maps and finding places on them, and out on the dirt roads I loved navigating her to lakes and ponds that nobody knew existed.

I'm in Maine! Where we go camping we used to always laugh at those using GPS because it was a guaranteed thing they'd get lost, and in some places, land on the Canadian border.
Back a couple of years ago, I tried seeing if there was a quicker route back to camp with the GPS and before we traveled it, I compared the route to my Atlas, and where the GPS would have taken us there wasn’t even a road!

1990 we flew from Boston to London Gatwick Airport, drove to Aberdeen, Scotland. We found my Grand-Aunt home using just a diners place map, that she mailed to us, showing a map of Aberdeen with her street circled...

I don't use the GPS thingie on my phone. To go somewhere I've never been, I look up the place online, zoom in to get the local roads. I actually HAND WRITE directions for myself. I use the state map to get me to where my directions take over.
