I guess if one is the kind of person that likes rabbit meat it's an option... I respect one's choice of which animals to raise for meat. We are raising hogs for meat currently. I have a relationship with them though(I taught one to sit on command) so I hope I don't freak out when it's time to butcher.:fl
Piece of advice. Don't eat pets and don't make pets out of food. EVER!!!

How is the doe? I agree that she needs to be retired. How old is she? What is your set up like?

I hope no one ever tells me to put any of my 3 pet rabbits in the crockpot... :bun One of rabbits died last week and there were a lot of tears shed on my part...

If the purpose of the animal is to be a pet, then likely no one will suggest it unless you make it known that the animal has qualities that make it unsuitable as a pet. Losing a pet is absolutely heartbreaking... but some animals are, shall we say, multi-purposeful?

Personally, I believe that meat animals should have just as much - if not MORE - love and respect than pet animals. Knowing that an animal will someday soon give its life to nourish mine then it deserves the BEST life possible until that day. My meat hogs have always had names and been dearly loved, and greatly respected for their gift of meat to us.

Thanks for that advice!!! That's really good!!! LOL I've distanced myself from the hogs quite abit lately as my dad has been feeding them so now I don't really have a reason to spend time with them. Which has helped out. But I do still do find pigs/hogs intriguing creatures as these are our first pair.

YES!!! And it has been proven that the quality of the meat is better if they've had a wonderful life so why not? But there's a fine line in between being emotionally attached and having a relationship I feel. But this is our first time raising hogs for meat. Also, the hogs we have were trapped in the woods when they were young. So in short, they were wild hogs! So it's been interesting having them around. Back to rabbits, I don't think I could ever see rabbits as meat like I see chickens like meat.

Pigs are AMAZING animals... I adore them!

We haven't done chickens for meat yet, and we have "meat rabbits" we are raising but haven't harvested yet... But I LOVE my chickens and would definitely need a solid reason to harvest any of my "pet" chickens (like a really mean roo we culled :( )

I find it funny that you butcher rabbits and not chickens and I butcher chickens and not rabbits... I do have some chickens that are kinda my favorites but I don't go out of my way really to just spend time with them. But I could spent all day with my rabbits. I'd just as soon butcher my childhood dog(who is now 10) as my rabbits. Like...:bun Pigs/hogs have never really intrigued until we got these. They're alotta fun to watch!

I spend a huge part of my day with all my stock haha I adore my rare and heritage breed chickens, and even my common breeds are endearing as heck. My rabbits are colourful and fun to watch, especially because we keep outdoor colonies... it is relaxing to just watch them graze and lounge and dig lol

I could literally spend my whole entire day watching my animals. Like just seeing them happy makes me happy. Each different species has so many interesting qualities about them... I love just love the outdoors. The breeze... the sounds... it's like mental yoga...

Exactly. If I am awake, I am outside. Heck, half the time I sleep outside too haha
