Hi. I’m new here. I have three hens. I have been fighting the occasional but constant rat visitations. I have taken food away at night. I have sprayed walls and ceiling with peppermint/clove/etc sprays. But recently an old farmer told me to mix Jiffy corn meal and baking soda 50 / 50 and add a small handful of sugar. Put it out where hens can’t go, next to a bowl of water. You can see more on line about this, but I have not seen a rat since 4 days after I put this mixture out. Other animals cannot get to it. It has now be 3 weeks without a trace of rat. Hopeful.

Rats can't burp so they die of bowel rupture. Not exactly humane but it does work and won't hurt anything else.
Yes, that is what I was told. Rat poison is at least as horrible and can hurt another animal that might eat a dead poisoned one. I had to do something. I continue with the essential oil sprays, natural repel granules that aren’t poison, in hopes they will just not come back. But I leave out the Jiffy/baking soda mix, too, in a confined area.
