I live in Godley, TX and I've decided to start my egg laying chickens with only Barred Rock's
Can anyone recommend where and what I should always be on the alert for or look out for?
Cost? What age do you purchase chickens if you want for them egg production?
Thanks in Advance.

You buy them as chicks for about $4- $5 a piece from feed stores, you raise them to 7 months old for them to lay.
Any particular reason for exclusively "barred rocks"? Barred in the color, Plymouth Rock is the breed. They also come in white, partridge, penciled, buff, Columbian etc.

it seems like a great first chicken for me. AFTER ALL I've read on various sights and
AG sites. They've always referenced them as Barred Rocks. I'm sorry I don't know your lingo but I'm a voracious reader and research the heck out of what I intend to do. Barred are also called Plymouths but I just posted the word Barred because it is what I want according to the article I read about choosing my birds. "If you have a small backyard enterprise and want a quiet, docile, friendly egg layer, the Barred Rock may be your bird" I will chose the Barred variety

We ordered from a hatchery. They'll ship them to the post office that handles your area then you'll get a call for pick up. Get them home, make sure they're eating and drinking. The only thing to really watch for is pasty butt.

Barred rocks are an excellent choice. There are however other excellent choices. You won't know what you like until you try it. I'd get different breeds to check them out. It also helps to be able to differentiate between the 4 for a variety of reasons.

I love Barred Rocks. I always have one in my small flock. Very sweet and curious little characters. I do like getting different colored, breeds of chickens, it’s easier to tell who’s who at a glance.
