Our buff orpington (1 year old) has a red line running up or down the back of her leg going onto her feet.

She just laid an egg and it was speckled, but I came in and washed it and it came off. Usually her eggs come out clean with no markings.

Her legs the sign of anything starting and is the egg ok to eat?

Thanks

Hi, Capt Morgan, my buff orpington roo has a red line going down his legs and that is COMPLETELY NORMAL (freaked me out when I first got him). However, I don't think my hens do. I'll go check and if they do, I'll let ya know.

Neither of my buff orp hens have the red lines going down their legs but my roo's is really red stripe. Hopefully someone knowledgeable about lines on hens will chime in.

awesome - love it when the response is "completely normal".

Thanks for the response!

Ummmmmmmm- in a roo it's normal, not sure about hens as none of my hens have the red stripes. Probably normal, but I would love to see a pic then I could tell you if it's the same as my roo's red stripes.

OK, thanks, I'll post tomorrow - they're tucked in bed sound asleep right now...

Ok, now that I took the pictures - they don't look that bad, except the kids say, the line was never there before.

They are with the chickens more than me so they notice things like this.

We think we have a rooster and it shows on there too. I am going to post elsewhere pictures of "hidiho" to ask. But he has the line and butter cream the hen has it.

Thanks. I hope I do the picture thing right.

hey, sorry it took so long to get back to you- stupid yahoo started putting some of the posts I subscribed to into my spam folder.

Look like healthy chicken legs- maybe you have a strain of buff orps that the hen has the red stripe. very cool
