Red Stars-true breed?

Glad to see you got even more info! I answered you briefly in your question on the First Egg post last night also? Here's a copy:

OT but here goes:
I think red stars are the same as the cinnamon queens, or golden comets, and a bunch of other names, they are the RED sex link chickens....a red mix pullet though....they all look like that, great egg layers and super disposition.
Here is the definition from My Pet Chicken:
Stars are "sex link" chickens, meaning they're bred specifically so that males and females are different colors when they hatch. Females are egg-laying machines that continue to lay well in the heat and cold, when many others slow down. The males are said to be good "fryers". Stars are not recognized by the American Poultry Association and are just one of many hybrid sex-link crosses available on the market today
Hope that helps, Tina/tfpets

I'm no expert, but I do have black sexlinks. It is my understanding that if you mix a red star with a RIR rooster, you will lose the sexlink characteristic. If I understand correctly, it only appears in the first generation chicks.

If this is not correct, someone please let me know...

Unfortunately not. If you mix a sex link with a RIR, you won't get a sex link. You'll get mutts, like my little ones:

These came from someone who claimed they were RIR's. A few look like RIR's, 2 look like the sex links, and the others.. look like mutts. Including the rooster in this picture ( the one to the left of the tomato snatching rooster).

They did get alot prettier as they got a little older.

I've got two McMurray Red Stars and I've had otherred sex links in the past. They are usually my favorite hens. Right now the are the friendliest along with one of my BOs. My son prefers the Stars because they are lighter and he can pick them up. If I hatch any of their eggs I will get half silkie mutts! Could be interesting....

A very nice lady gave me some of her older red stars ... they don't lay much but she knew I would make soup out of them. The thing is ... they look like pictures I have seen of ex-battery hens. They are hideously featherless. This lady takes good care of her chickens. So I am wondering if this is part of the breed - looking so bad. The lady said they put all their energy into making eggs and didn't seem to be much left over to put feathers on? She breeds her own and I got to see the rhode island reds she breeds to delawares and white rocks. We haven't butchered any of the hens yet. Keeping them a while to see if they will still lays some. They are sweet personalitied little things.
