Rhode Island White Chickens

do the Rhode island whites fly? I am wanting some hens but cant find any info on if they fly. Do you still have some available for sale?

All chickens fly but what I have found in my flocks is that hatchery birds are more willing to fly out of the pen than Heritage birds. I have a great line of Rhode Island Whites that are totally heritage type. Look at the pics of a few of them that are only 3-4 months old. You will never see them like this from a hatchery. Hatchery birds really are a white rock more than a Rhode Island White. Single combs means they introduced white rock into the breed instead of being a try RC Rhode Island White. I will try to post a few pics of them at 5 moths old. The last cockerel weighed in at 5 LBS at 18 weeks. Humm I wonder what is that going to really look like on the dinner table?

This was taken at 3.5 months old ... weight till you see the 5 month old pic....OMG they are huge.

Oh, I want some. Any suggestions as to where to get some with the rose comb? I am so very interested and would love to help bring back this breed. I have 3 Australorps and 2 barred rock all hens and they try to fly but cant really get off the ground. Do the RI Whites fly well and try to roost in trees or do they pretty much stay on the ground and roost close to the ground?

My whites roost like all chickens...in the coop on the roost boards. They can fly but not well nothing like a legbar or leghorn. My line are pretty stout birds so flying is not going to be a problem with them.

Royan Carey in KS has a really fantastic flock. Getting eggs or chicks from him is a totally different story. He is always busy busy busy

Hope that helps!

It does help tremendously! Thank you! Hope to be enjoying the breed later this year or the first of next. Getting started is always the hardest step. So excited to have a starting place. :)

I see this is an old thread but in case anyone might want real RC Rhode Island White large chickens, I will have some for sale this 2014 season. Not until late spring and they are very nice birds. Some of the big hatcheries advertise SC RI White but they are NOT recognized and are smaller birds. The commercial birds are good layers and I do keep a few myself but the real RC RI Whites are truly wonderful chickens and very rare. felix

Do you still raise rose comb RIW's

I have 5 white Rhode island pullets and 5 reds, the white one are so sweet and gentle, the others are always away from me and they like to fight with others

I know this is an old post and I am new to this GREAT forum. I am looking for Rhode Island White and La Bresse Galouise hatching eggs. Does anybody know where I can get them.
