Ringneck Dove - Strange Vocalizations

It sounds like an affectionate noise to me. Pidgey makes a similar sound when I'm near the cage, or when I hold him. If she's by herself, she probably formed a very strong attachment to you. Doves tend to do that, since they're social birds. The same thing happened to Pidgey after his cage mate of 18 years, Spice, died. He was very lonely and started bonding with me and exhibiting new behaviors. For example, he started moaning when I held him, and preening whenever he sees me brush my hair in front of his cage. I hope this helps.

I am posting this in the hope of gaining some insight into these vocalizations my female Ringneck dove, Sable, has been making.

Sable is almost 1 year old (my husband and I have had her since she was approximately 4 months old). She has been making these sounds more frequently lately, however, I was initially not really concerned as the Ringneck doves I have had in the past would also make this noise from time to time, but seemed fine otherwise.

Sable also seems healthy in every other way. She is eating and drinking normally, is alert and seems to have good energy levels. The only issue (if it is an issue at all) is this seemingly unusual sound she has been making.

I hope that someone will be able to give some clarification and/or suggestions.

Thank you in advance. :)

My dove Dorian makes a similar noise, but his is raspy. I have no idea what it means, but I notice he'll make it when my zebra finch gets to close to him, and he doesn't like the finch, so maybe it's a sound of agitation? Either way I played your video and everytime Sable made that noise in the video Dorian would respond with his raspy variation. So I'm not sure what the sound means, but I'm very curious to know. I mean it kind of seems like a form of communication the way he responded to Sable's sound, but who knows?

1. Aerial predator warning. The sound is usually more "urgent" sounding than your video, but still soft. Hawks are the usual cause, but other large birds (crows) or even airplanes or balloons will sometimes set them off. They usually stare with one eye at the danger. They see it long before I do, and I have to follow their gaze to find the intruder.

My doves and pigeons make this noise as a warning sound, when they are disturbed by, or spot a potential predator. They usually make this noise if there is a large bird flying overhead where there can see it.......

Maybe, check that your doves can't see something resembling a hawk shape or even a real bird outsdie the window.

You should be proud of what you are doing.
I have been taking care of ringnecks, (over a dozen), for over four years now.
Not to worry. This is the look and sound of a very happy dove that loves you! EDIT: The tongue in the beak smacking movement is a "I love you sign". Keep up the good work! She/he is talking to you. For predators its different like a question (is it all right?!) and they don't make the smiley blinking eyes. Also one looked at me and made a similar but more pleading like sound and labored preening action when she was cold. Turned up the heat and she made a sharper similar sound and rapid preening action. So you will learn by the tone and actions what they are saying.
I use a wood clothespin on the cage with fresh baby spinach leaves clipped to it. They like it.
I put sesame seeds with their grit in a bowl and tell them it's time for treaties sweeties.
I give them a good spray with a (clean dedicated for doves) spray bottle. Sometimes they squat down and raise their wing and make a happy sound like in your video as I spray them.
They like sitting in a little basket with pine wood chip bedding. Misty, Stormy, Safron, Marble.

When one makes that solefull coo as an egg is coming they pile into the basket with her. It's so adorable. I have the males (2/cage) and females (4/cage) seperated.
I took my golden baby with me into a warm shower (careful not to flood their face/nostrils or they can choke and can get pneumonia like complications) and she made this sound the first time. Dab off the water a bit. Then she likes meditating under a towel, sometimes for a couple of hours.
They all have different personalities so you have to let them tell you what they like.
I played different music and when she didn't like something (American Band) she would give me an angry bird look and coo at me harshly. They mostly like melodic gentle music. They will make a little bark noise similar to the video and preen happily when it's something they like. (
) as an example.
I can tell the way she looks at you and makes this sound that you have a very close and attentive relationship.
If you have them out and want to put them back in, do not chase them. Not a good thing. Turn off the lights, (they can't see in low light conditions like we can), then you can put your hand under them and they will step on to it, no problem. Sweet soft birds.

That is one happy bird that loves you. The vocalization, the smiling blinking eyes looking at you, the yum yum tongue in the smacking beak, all say "I feel great, I'm happy and satisfied, I love you."

The way she is sitting on her feet low on the perch says "I am cozy comfortable"
