Just curious what time everyone let's their chickens out in morning? Or if you have an automatic door does it open at sunrise or do you set it to open later? I have a cockerel and my town does allow roosters but I'm worried because he has definitely found his voice (about 9-10 week old bantam). I normally wake up early so at about 530 I open their door (my automatic door is currently being shipped!!! lol) Now that Tony is crowing i worry it will upset neighbors. I dont normally leave food or water in coop and when I open the door everyone is VERY ready to get out. Thanks!

My schedule is : being lazy in the morning. I bought the Chicken-guard auto-opener that works with a light sensor. The the early birds are safe in the night this way. After sunrise the pop door to the run opens automatically. The run is net covered but not safe for nightly predators.

I love it and it works great for over 5 years now, with only one hiccup because it got wet after a storm.

I let them free range a few hours a day if someone is around / at home.

My town allows roosters if neighbours don’t complain.

I open the pop doors before I leave for work in the morning. Which depending on the time of year is either 4 or 5 in the morning. The chickens are usually still on the roost when I open the doors They come out into the runs shortly after daybreak. I live out in the country, so we can have roosters. I can hear someone else’s rooster off in the distance. Definitely far enough away to not be disturbing . So I assume my boys crowing does not disturb them either.

I wake up at 4:45am
Sunrise right now is 5:15am
I get ready for the morning and let everyone free range at 6:00am before heading to work. (By this time almost everyone is waiting in the run.)
They all go back into the coop at 6:45pm so I do a count and shut everything up at 7pm.
I also have a rooster. He crows 24/7/365.
I do have a neighbor I like, when I visits I frequently bring up the chickens because Chicken People always talk about their chickens. They say they can hear the rooster when they are outside. Then the other neighbors who are all high and mighty, live in the woods, have annoyingly said they can hear the chickens all the time. This doesn’t bother me. I only see or speak to them once a year just to inform them that the cougar is back in our area.

I have an auto door for my chickens and guineas. Between 8 and 9 oclock I will walk around, check the feeders/waterers for the chicken coop, guinea coop and quaiviary. I will open the big door of the rabbit/chicken barn, weather permitting, to keep the air flowing nicely. Then I will do my rabbits morning feeding and collect eggs. Depending on weather that may be all. If it is very hot refill rabbit waterers in afternoon. If it is very cold de ice rabbit waterers in afternoon. A couple hours before sunset I go back to the barn, top off my grow out rabbits food and water, close the big door and call it a day.

I LOVE AUTO DOORS

Wake up
Fill feeders
Change waters, if necessary
Put eggs out, that i bring in at night due to rats
Take cover off other eggs
Check for dead chickens, none in a long time
Put my blind chicken out to peck grass
Bathe myself in the river
Put my blind chicken in his feeder
Heat coffee
Put blind chicken in his area
Back to bed by 6:30am for a few minutes
Busy rest of day on farm
Back to bed by 7pm usually

Something like that

I let me hens out at 5:30-5:40, and let them free range all day.

They have a run, where the food, water, and perches are, so that the chickens have a safe area to eat and such.

My motto: The earlier the better for chickens lol

I love it. Lazy chicken ownership is my goal lol - I need those auto doors.
Question - they cannot get wet? Or yours was damaged during the storm?

Both my auto doors have a small awning above them. The doors are touted as "waterproof" but at the least water will freeze up the tracks in the winter. At worst moisture will permeate to the motor casing. Most of the auto doors are pretty pricey. The awnings are $30. Seems worth the little extra to protect the investment. I have an "ador1" and a "run-chicken" brand door. I would recommend both, with the ador being a little beefier, with a longer lasting battery, at about double the price. The awnings are made by ador also. I'll never go back to the archaic practice of hand opening doors. lol but seriously. It is incredibly freeing. Now with the right waterer and feeder I can leave my birds for days at a time if I need to.
