I am in need of ideas for a covering on the top of my chicken coop. I live in SE North Carolina & it gets pretty darned hot in the summer. The current roof is plastic chicken wire & the sides are metal chicken wire. I am thinking I need to put some sort of cover on top of the existing wire so the ladies won't get baked by the summer sun. Maybe some sort of parachute type material or something? Does anyone else have a cloth roof? Any ideas would be very appreciated!
I tried a couple of tarps, I also tried some shower curtains lol but they ripped, blew off and so forth.

I recommend shade cloth. You can use two thicknesses if necessary, esp. on the west side. It is less apt to rip off in the wind or cause your whole coop/run to go sailing through the air (note: LESS apt, not totally immune from the problem!) than a tarp would be.

If home depot (etc) doesn't carry it, try large garden centers and nurseries, tho it will be pricier there.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Thank you so very much!

I would never had thought of shade cloth and that they might sell it at HD! I was looking at all these crazy websites at SHADE SAILS that are very expensive and triangular which would be useless! lol

Check in your phone book for semi trailer repair shops. I get chemlite ( roofing material for semi trailers) for free from my local shop. sometimes you need to patch some holes but it is flexible enough to suit your needs. I have them try to save it in one piece. It will roll up to an 8' long roll to fit in a pickup bed. when you unroll it its about 50' long. They will probably give it to you for hauling it off. Then they don't have to pay to send it to the landfill. You may have to ask them to save it as one piece, they usually break it down to fit the dumpster.

have you considered corrugated plastic roofing? it would arc over your metal and you could secure it down. it would be a bit more involved to get it on, but i bet it would stay

its the stuff they make some awnings out of.

Since shade is a premium here in So. Cal., I am going to cover my run with corrigated panels. I will have them met at the center rib and have an opening for air release. The crown will be raised above that to allow more air release. Just have not been able to get material to finish this part yet.

Just waiting to be covered.
