Rooster doesn't get to eat

I have a really great rooster like that too. So when I give a limited supply food retreat, I throw some to the back of group to him as he’s usually standing off and he has started to help himself. I worry about him too, so I have been keeping food available all the time and have been looking at Wildbird excluding devices. But someone said they don’t work.

I had a Cochin rooster starve to death even tho there was always food available. He would make sure to call the hens over for any treat that he found but he wouldn't eat. His first winter when the temps were bitter I found him dead. Nothing obviously wrong with him but he was skin and bones. Sometimes I think there was something genetically wrong with the 12 Cochins I bought that year, none of them lived past a year. One offspring that I got from them lived 5 years. I wonder about inbreeding since they were pure bred. :idunno

Most roosters will eat IF food is available 24/7. If there is a food scarcity, limited food in quantity or duration, they might not.

Not sure what a wildbird excluding device is, maybe people trying to hang CDs or beads trying to keep wild birds from coming in to steal feed? That doesn't work. What does work is a treadle feeder and even a poor treadle feeder that is not ratproof usually will stop wild birds. Just be sure and check the reviews for customers reporting problems. All that said, a proper ratproof feeder is likely less money and will solve nearly all vermin issues. Again, take the negative reviews more seriously than the positive reviews. Lots of people just need a treadle feeder and give five stars without having a vermin problem.
