Ok I was 99.9% sure he was a rooster. I'm kind of new to chickens so I just wanted to be sure. Also, what's a cockerel and the differences between them and roosters?

A cockerel is a male chicken over the age of 1 year which is roughly full maturity in most roosters. A rooster is a male chicken from day 1 up to a year. Cockerels are preferred in most opinions because they usually crow less and they have a much better fertility and are better at mounting, just more experienced.

that is in no doubt at all a rooster. you can tell by his saddles and hackles that look just like your roosters in the background may i ask why you thought he was a hen with those saddles and hackles as only roosters have long slender pointed hackles. there is also his 2 toned coloring.

he probably has not crowed because of that other rooster if you were to put him in his own pen with his own ladies he would start crowing probably asap (like right when you put him in there to a day or 2)
We just always though he was. I guess we didn't want him to be a rooster so we just tried to ignore it. We used to have a different rooster with the one in the background and they both crowed all the time. We will probably get rid of him because he is really mean.

it depends on who you are talking to. some say a cockerel is a young male rooster that has yet to reach sexauall maturaty or any male chicken that is under a year old. goes the same with a pullet (a female chicken)

mean roosters are not allowed around here he will end up in someones stew pot as no one wants a mean rooster....(i consider them cockerels till they are a year old lol)

What I mean buy he is mean is that he doesn't let you touch him really. Sorry if i conveyed the message wrong.

you are really really mistaken about the difference between a rooster and a cockerel as these terms are used to discribe a male chicken. the more formale saying of rooster is cock

cockerel = a young male chicken
cock (rooster) = a mature male chicken
stag (which you may run into) = a matuer game cock
