My prized BCM rooster is trying to crow but no sound is coming out, I can hear air moving but he can’t make noise. Seems to be breathing. Won’t let me get close to check him out, was fine this afternoon, crowing away. Could something be stuck?!?

Thanks, I checked him just now and he’s eating. Maybe he just crowed himself hoarse? I’ll keep an eye on him. I was terrified he had some kind of obstruction, but I don’t think he would be eating if he did?

Probably a respiratory infection or gapeworm. Have any of your other chickens come down with similar symptoms? Sneezing, gurgling, gasping, wheezing, eye infections etc?

I've never had one with gapeworm but have had respiratory infection. Respiratory infections will constrict the crow in roosters. They will sound like they are whispering or the crowing will get cut short.

When you get a chance today or in the morning, could you look inside his beak and throat with a flashlight for any yellow or white growths or canker? Has there been any fowl pox in your flock recently? How much ventilation do you have in your coop? Is there any mold that might cause some breathing problems?

No mold in my coop, it’s decently ventilated I think, we had really terrible air quality about a week ago from the Oregon wild fires, it was unhealthy to hazardous for over a week, but for the last week it’s been pretty good. Would it have caused this delayed of a reaction? My other chickens seem fine but my rooster is a older, so maybe more susceptible to whatever this is?

I’ll try to catch him tomorrow and look. He’s not a big fan of being handled and he has some pretty big spurs
