Roosters in Michigan

We have 50 acres, zoned agricultural, in Shiawassee county, and can have any livestock, no problems. It was a priority for us to be in a rural area, zoned agricultural, and wouldn't do anything else.
Moving to an area not zoned agricultural, just don't do it. Look for land first, and realize that a big house on a small lot might not be a perfect fit, if you want poultry of any sort.

And our place, house, barn, and workshop, cost what that big house on a small lot would have cost the same year.
I would love to have so many acres however we found a house on 1.49 with the option to by over 36 more acres surrounding it over time. That we can do. It is a township in Montmorency County. I called the zoning guy just to be sure and even he has chickens!

I used to live in Tawas City Michigan on 10 acres, zoned Ag/Rs/Rural.
Just can't have roosters in the city, only in the farmland areas.

I am in the thumb. If you !I've in a village or city you would probably need to ask for a variance. If you are in a township it should not be a problem regardless of the zoning.
You wouldn't believe the restrictions they try to place on chicken keepers! Some have backed down when I bring up RtFA though, but I still move on because it's a potential conflict. We have found a place though, in a twp in Montmorency. Just had our closing delayed, but hopefully only 2 weeks or so 🤞

BTW - wherever you move to, I can bring roosters to you.
That would be so helpful! I really like the glw, and the bsl! Do those two get along? They are gorgeous! If I have to choose 1 it would be the glw, but I need to find him a couple girls for company!

I live in the SE corner of Barry County. Township of Assyria. We live on 2.5 acres - no restrictions. We are zoned AG. Barry County is awesome. Lots of Amish, and a great constitutional sheriff.
I now (after this last hatching) have 5 roosters. I'll GIVE them to you.
Let me know if and how I can help.
I just looked up Barry and it's pretty far from where I'll be! It's a lovely offer, and if you still have any of these cutie pies left, we could meet in the middle somewhere if it's far for you. Of course it would be helpful if I had my new closing date. Maybe Monday or Tuesday I'll have at least some idea.

Thank you! Sorry for taking so long to reply. Finding a house where I could have the chickens I wanted was all consuming! I think I've found it though.

We were going to close on 7/28 but there's a glitch, so it may be a few more weeks. I'm looking for a couple of hens too. Discovered a tick on my son 4 days after seeing this house. Shame on us for forgetting to check after! We'll be needing some insect control friends immediately.

I'll have to see where Barry County is. We'll be in Montmorency, but I'll travel a bit for birds!
Hi Prunellopy - congratulations on your new home! You're quite a ways north, but we're fine. We'd much rather drive our birds to a new home, than to a processor. If you could meet us at least part ways, it would be appreciated. Not absolutely necessary, though. How many roosters did you want? We might have a few hens we could toss in. They're mature, but still laying. Are you set up for birds? Just let me know. Happy moving!! Hopefully it's not too far. :frow :wee

Hi again, @Prunellopy, glad you found a goo place, it's beautiful up there!
About ticks; if you still have that one, there are labs that will test for some of the many diseases one may carry, do look into it. And talk to your doctor about having your son tested for a few of them, and when best to have that blood testing done. Better to get medication before actual illness may develop.

Thanks! He freaked and threw it in the toilet, but the doc said no test unless symptoms. No symptoms so far thankfully!
