I thought I would be okay with my new chickens, but the rule about having a 6 foot fence was nowhere on the city website and now that I spent a fortune building my coop, I am going to have to replace my 4 foot chain link fence with a 6 foot fence to get a permit.

What is the point of this rule anyway? Considering we are not even allowed to let them out of the run, it makes no sense.

Also, does anyone know what the potential consequences are in Roy, UT for keeping chickens without a permit? I am friendly with all my neighbors and don't think they would complain to the city or anything.

If you get caught keeping chickens without a permit, you will probably be fined and/or forced to get rid of your chickens. If you trust your neighbors and a city employee driving by can't see or hear them from the street, you might not have problems. But, you have to weigh the cost of building a fence against the risks of fines, which I've regularly seen in the 100s of dollars, and being forced to find new homes for your chickens.

The full ordinance is here.

Get some of that bamboo privacy stuff and put it on your fence to make it 6'. As an added bonus, your nosey neighbors will no longer be able to see everything in your yard....

But seriously, add to the existing fence instead of replacing it.

This is a great idea!
