Sally's GF3 thread

@cavemanrich, you're right. We can't take it with us!

I remember seeing a book titled something like, How to Die Broke. It was about how to make your money last the rest of your life, but not leave a big pile at the end. I wish I'd bought it.

We have no heirs. So I don't see any reason not to spend $$$ on ourselves.

Hubby is leaving tomorrow for Colorado, for a friend's wedding. I'm not going because I don't have anyone I trust to take care of the chickens.

--Former chicken sitter is my "neighbor who had a heart attack." Her husband is the neighbor who fell and broke his hip a few months ago.

--Next door neighbor has chickens, but TBH, I am not at all comfortable with her style of care. After her mom (another neighbor) and I cleaned out her coop and got cubic YARDS (really: a pile 15' long, 2' wide, a foot deep for my garden, and the same for her mom) of chicken poopy straw, I told hubby that neither she nor her kids were going to care for my chickens. They are nice people, they live next door, and I'm not going to get mad at them for how they take care of their chicken, but they are not going to take care of mine.

--The aforementioned mom. Nope, not going to stir that pot. She'd ask, "Why don't you ask the kids/grandkids?"

--The "new people" on the road. Often gone travelling or for work. Like right now.

--The "far" neighbors, 1/4+ mile away. A) I barely know them, and B) I don't want to have the conversation of, "Oh, you can't ask your next door neighbor or her mom?"

To be honest, I don't want to go anywhere right now. I think Pip doesn't have a lot of time left. She's the hen who laid a lash egg last February. The average life expectancy after that is 6 months, so I've read here on BYC. She's beat that by two months already. She's going through a so-so molt, not too bad, but I want to be here for her. I cherish the times when she gets up on my lap. She looks around, closes her eyes, and takes a brief nap.

So my traveling days are done. I won't be going to Colorado for the wedding, or to North Carolina for Thanksgiving with the in-laws in early November.

Sally,,, I like your attitude. :hugs
I know chickens are pet family to you , just like mine.:love
Don't you also have a doggie??? Or is it another regulars posting person out here?
I have a small flock, so I do have a solution. When DW and I need to go somewhere for a few days, I place chickens into their winter housing.
Winter housing for my pet chickens is inside my garage, pigeon loft. I no longer keep pigeons, so the chickens get the whole CONDO. Provide plenty of feed and water for duration of trip, and all is well.
There is light on a timer,, as well as access to a small outdoor aviary.

Winter housing during cold weather,, I tend to it daily, with fresh feed, and fresh water. I also warm up garage with wood stove,, if it gets mity chilly. I don't overheat,,,, just maintain above freezing temps.

Yes, we have a dog too. It's not impossible to take a dog and find a motel where you can stay. We've done it a few times.

Freya will miss him a lot. Daddy is the play person. Mom is for cuddle-pets. She'll be pretty mopey for a couple days and then be resigned to just hanging with mom.

I told him that he should take Freya to North Carolina when he goes next month, and he probably will.

Were these folks in North Carolina affected by Helene?

I had a plumbing stupidly rectified today, and thought of what @Sally PB discovered behind the wall.

Look at this ⬇️

Look at it again.

Yes, the shower was installed BUT the drain wasn't connected! The water from every single shower taken in the last 18 months wound up on the dirt underneath the house.

El Stupido.
