Sand for coop & run.

I’m glad you mentioned AstroTurf. I was wondering about this myself because I’m building a new coop and would like roll-out nest boxes so I won’t be able to use any “loose” nesting materials as they’ll slide off the slope lol
We have a lip edge on the open side of the nest boxes, the girls aren't always delicate when leaving the boxes haha.

Recently, I found out that a coarser grade of sand was available to purchase locally that the rock, sand & gravel store would load in my 5 gal buckets for $1.35 each. It works well in the sand trays, on the floor of coop & in dust bath bins (more weight to it, doesn't tip over as easily). I used to buy play sand & found it to be dustier, but worked well in my coops sand trays. The coarser sand works just as well to clump the chicken droppings from night roosting, am able to use a kitty litter scoop every morning & remove the droppings along with the moisture from them. The play sand soaked up much more & had to replenish it more often; but the sand I'm getting cheaper now is working just as well & do not remove as much sand with the scoop daily. Yeah, an even better sand solution, which is still a great system for my current coop. Best wishes.
