Hi everyone! I can’t find washes coarse construction sand or river sand at local landscaping companies, so I wanted to know if these from Home Depot or tractor supply would be good. I wanted to put it down in the run as I’ve heard great things about using sand. Can someone let me know if they’ve ever used these brands and sand and what was their experience?

Hi! I haven’t used the sand from Home Depot or Tractor Supply myself, but I’ve heard others have had good experiences with it for chicken runs. The key is making sure the sand is washed and not too fine, as that can cause drainage issues. If you can’t find washed coarse sand, you might want to check if there’s another local option that’s more suitable. It’s great that you’re planning to use sand, though – I’ve heard it’s great for drainage and keeping things clean in the run! Hopefully, others can share their experience with these specific brands.

I haven’t used the sand from Home Depot or Tractor Supply, but here are some tips when picking sand for your chicken run:

  1. Washed Sand: Make sure it’s washed to avoid dust and debris, which can be harmful to chickens and make the area too messy.
  2. Coarse Sand: Opt for coarse sand over fine sand for better drainage and less compaction.
  3. Avoid Contaminants: Double-check that the sand is free from chemicals, especially if it was used for things like de-icing roads.
  4. Quantity: Make sure you have enough to cover the run properly and to maintain it as it gets dirty.
  5. Maintenance: Keep an eye on it and regularly scoop out any waste or wet areas to keep it fresh.
