Sand or stone?

No, no gravel. It would mix with the sand and be a total nightmare to clean and fairly unpleasant to walk on. Plus, you want to be able to roto-till it and pea stones or gravel would make that problematic.

Seriously, your rototilling it? Mixing it all together? Poo and all?

I sift mine every so often. but then again, what do i know?

Yes, seriously- roto-tilling the sand is good chicken run management. It get scooped out daily, Sweet PDZ sprinkled on it periodically and tilled in when needed.

My flock gets giddy when they see us holding garden forks and shovels. They know we are going to turn over the contents of the run and they are going to feast on worms and critters.
I am so jealous. I want a rototiller for Christmas!

Seriously. What you don't know is that the droppings are sifted out of the sand every day- it makes for a healthier environment for the chickens and keeps the sand nice and fluffy for dust bathing. Gardens are roto-tilled for a reason and so is my chicken run.
