Hello! We were delighted this morning to find what looks like our first egg. However the shell was incredibly thin, so thin it could easily be crushed if we weren’t careful. The membrane was in tact, but the shell itself felt like sandpaper. We offer free choice oyster shells, have plenty of fresh water, and the chickens have a basic feed (we have roos too), and plenty of free range time each day. Is this normal when they start to lay? Thank you for your help!

Hi! Yes, this is completely normal for new layers. It's very common for them to have small, thin-shelled, and oddly textured eggs when they are just starting to lay. You should start to see normal eggs within the next few weeks!
