Sapphire Gem - Leg color

I didn't realize how camera shy our Sapphire Gem was until I just went looking for a picture of her legs!

Our girl has very, very dark blue legs, dark toes, and the bottom of her feet are yellow.

How interesting!! And such a PRETTY bird!!! :love:love:love These have been some of my favorites out of the diverse group we've managed to collect. They're, by far, the sweetest (minus my Phoebe-kins who is a Buff O or Calico Princess) and those feathers... to die for. I love this color.

But this is why I'm curious about leg color. I wonder how many are different. My willow leg has a white-ish willow sole while the one with dark, almost black, shanks/yellow feet has a fully yellow sole. I love genetics and it's so fun to see the variances! *nerd alert!*

I'm also very curious about genetics, but having cut my genetic nerdy teeth on horses as a kid, I've struggled to translate dog and now chicken genetics in my musty old brain!

We love Gemma. She's a hoot. My husband picked her out and named her. She's a chatty girl, and only a little less sailor-mouthed as our Welsummer (I'm not fluent in chicken, but I think I'd be blushing if I was!). She's the only one of our pullets that doesn't bully our sweet BO (who's blind or visually impaired in her right eye), and has actively sought her friendship from the beginning. :)

I'll try to get more/better pictures of her legs and feet tomorrow (for science!).

Out of curiosity, does your Sapphire Gem's comb flop slightly? Our girl's comb was vertical until the day before she started laying!

Awh!! How sweet!! Gemma sounds like quite the fun little lady!

My girls are almost 7 weeks old and just now starting to have little spiky combs appearing! However, now that you say that, what is coming up doesn't seem to stand just entirely straight. Pretty much straight but does seem to kinda droop slightly. Interesting! Science!! Hah!

Our girl really doesn't enjoy having her picture taken! I've been completely spoiled by a curious BO who photo bombs and poses every chance she gets, lol!

Upon closer inspection, Gemma's legs and the tops of her feet are very dark blue. Between her toes is a little mottled. Bottoms of her feet are very yellow.

She was not about to cooperate with my photographic endeavors this morning!

Oh she's absolutely gorgeous!!! I'm starting to wonder if our two are actually SG's or if maybe they are Lavender Orps instead. Unless maybe their heads just get darker as they get older...? One has a darker head than the other. I'm very intrigued by all this.

I fully understand the photo bombers....... IMG_1272.jpg IMG_1271.jpg IMG_1264.jpg IMG_1234.jpg IMG_1233.jpg

Lol! "Mom! Mom! Mom! ...whatcha doin??"

When I looked up sapphire gems initially, there were pictures of hens with light and dark heads. We saw both in the chick bin; I was limited to only one by DH, so I told him I wanted one with the darker head.

They're interesting though. They all seem to get the almost stained glass appearance to their feathers - which I can't lie, I absolutely adore!

Chickens.... I swear..

Interesting, for sure!! I'm super excited to see how my girls change as they grow! They are most definitely the sweetest!! I got a wing hug tonight as I was moving them to the bigger coop so they'll be protected from the storms tomorrow. I'm just in love with their feathers already!

I can't find a thread anywhere that answers my question or any help from Google and everything on Google brings me back here. I don't want to hijack anyone else's thread for a completely different question/discussion so here I am.

For those of you with Sapphire Gems, what colors are your bird's legs? I've got two SG's from TSC and one has 100% willow colored legs and feet while the other has darker shanks with yellow feet. After scouring the internet, trying to figure out if this was normal since the "breed" is a mix, I came up empty. I also can't find anything telling me what the heck this "breed" is made from. Everything just says that they're close to Old Andalusians. Does anyone have secret chicken knowledge to know what they were created with? Are they a mix of a Blue Plymouth Rock and something?

Mostly, I just wonder about the legs as a curiosity! Pictures are encouraged just for the sake of all of us staring at beautiful chickens. Here are my girls with their friends. These 6 move as one unit. Not really digging the flock integration thing at all. Everyone will get there eventually.

I have 6 sg from TSC (and am hatching 8 more, as of right now 2 have hatched with a third almost there.) I have noticed that the males tend to have yellow shanks and feet while the females have black or black and yellow shanks and feet. Hope his helps

I have a sapphire gem that was supposed to be a pullet when we picked it out from the farm store. She’s much bigger than the others in the flock, yet the youngest, and very yellow thick legs. She has started crowing this past weekend. She is now known as Charlie lol. I also have 2 sapphire gem splash. One has very yellow legs, one has blueish grey with yellow bottoms.

I have three chicks from Rural King (They get their chicks from Hoovers). They are supposed to be pullets and had the correct pullet markings but we shall see. One has dark legs, light soles. The other two have dark shanks and pinkish toes, yellow soles.
