I have been searching for Sapphire Olive Evers for a while and finally got a pair at Cal Ranch. I’m pretty sure the hatchery that supplies them is Hoovers Hatchery. The two chicks are only a week and a half old, but they are already looking significantly different from each other so I am worried I have one Roo and one Hen.

The pictures aren’t the greatest but the two are side by side in each. They don’t have obvious head spots or color differences so I wasn’t too worried about the lighting. The one I think is male is slightly more black, and the other more silver but both almost the same color.

The one I believe is a hen has noticeable tail and wing feathers already and is significantly larger. The other has a fuzzy bit and much less feathers on its wings and a slightly larger comb.

Nothing too crazy but the fact they are so different already has me worried. Should I go back and buy another to make sure I have two hens, or is the little darker one just a late bloomer?

While development differences can indicate gender, it’s really much too early to say for sure at this point. Normally around 6-8 weeks is when you can tell gender more accurately.
