Saw this out my kitchen window while washing dishes

Scared the crud out of me. Thankfully the chickens in this coop are free range and I had already collected eggs for the day. I tried to carry it back into the woods on my rake but it squirmed off and got into my compost pile. Kill it or leave it be?

Looks like a harmless rat snake. Leave him be. He has an important job to do.
 
A couple of snakes attempted to go through my fence but also touched the hot wires and were electrocuted.
