Howdy there! I'll be putting together the thread throughout the next few weeks, but this first post is to give you a run down of the flock. I let them decide who they want to associate themselves with, so the dynamic of the flock is a little odd. I REPEAT, they choose who they branch off with, so some groups male/female ratio Is not where it needs to be but I let them do what they want unless someone is getting harmed. Pictures are coming soon!

My flock has separated themselves into 3/4 sub-sections:

Orange Section (ages range from 6-8 months old):
- 11 ducks (3 drakes, 8 hens)
- Black Swedish - (2 hens, 1 drake)
- Blue Swedish - (1 hen)
- silver Apple-yard - (1 hen)
- Apple-yard/Pekin - (1 hen)
- Pekin - (2 hens, 3 drakes)

Red Section (1 year-ish):
- Pekin- (3 females)

Green Section (2.5-ish years):
- Pekin - (2 males, 1 female)

Black Section (1 month-ish):
- Pekin (2; TBD)

Gray Section (age unknown, 2 yrs):
- Pekin (1 drake, 1 hen)

The Orange and Red Section are commonly found together, but they keep a few feet distance from each other. The Black Section can be found with Orange during the day time (when they aren't penned up).

Living Situation:
The ducks all have ONE coop, they are penned up at night in. ALL sections of the flock are rounded up and mixed together in the pen. They all just sleep and wait to be let out in the morning lol. SO, the ducks are let out to roam the neighborhood during the day, sometimes they take swims down the canal, whatever their little wild hearts desire. Everyone feeds them (not bread!) and yeah!

Laying!!:
So Orange group just began laying, they lay 2 eggs a day and the majority are double-yolkers! I provide enough nutrients and supply calcium so they don't form any deficiency's. The other groups lay one daily.

My "Mission Statement":
We strive to provide our ducks with the most wild-like life they are able to have. If they want to start a nest, they get to start the nest. If they want to move canals, I'll go and feed them everyday but they get to move canals. I want to provide these ducks with the best and most enriching life they can have.

Hatching:
Currently (Sept. 7th, 2024) I have 9 eggs in the incubator. They were placed in on 9/3/24. There is a double-yolker in there...

Today, I come bearing pictures of the flock. But first order of business, logging today.

Today -
- Refilled food containers (added calcium powder)
- Black section spent first night outside
- double yolker still has both embryo's going strong

This is the flock a few months ago, they live in the neighbor's yard primarily (that's where the coop is) because my 3 dogs will chase and kill if I kept them in the backyard.

This pic is all of orange Section and 2 of red I believe. They breed a lot so we get slipped tendons quite often :( .

Red Section :

This is their baby pics, The middle one I hatched, and the two bigger ones are from tractor supply. My friend bought 2 ducks and I hatched a single one. She couldn't keep them after a while, so I took them.

Gray Section :

This is Puddles, The male in the gray pair. I hatched & raised him in my bedroom, and then he found a mate (sadly, his aunt or mother). They have had one clutch, but they all died (I think at the end he killed them...), Momma may be on a clutch right now, but if she is i'll be taking them before they hatch. (the clutch was this spring, so she shouldn't do another one, and Puddles is not a good father).

Green Section:

These guys we got off Facebook. A military couple didn't want to keep separate in their marriage, so in order to move together the had to get rid of the ducks. We took them, and that's that!

Hey there! So this week, we have collected 57 eggs!

We also had a pond liner that I needed to sell, so I hopped on Facebook Marketplace and sold the 125g sucker for $100. I will drop that off to the dude sometime soon, when the heavy rain slows down LOL!

We are on day 10 of incubation, I'm not sure how many are still kicking, but 3 for sure.

Not much to report today!

4 eggs of the 9 that were placed in there are still alive and are on day 15

4/9 grew (44%)
6/9 started to grow (66%)
7/9 were fertile (77%)

So from our relatively new layers, we have a 77% fertility rate with our flock ratio being 12 females:4 males (3 hens per drake). I'd say that's pretty good for off-season, and new drakes figuring out how to breed!

9/29/24:
Birth and Death
I Haven't updated in a while... So first order of business..
Deaths: 2
1 black Swedish hen; orange section
1 Pekin (unknown sex); black section

Rest in peace my sweet ones. Your life was short lived, but I know it was the best one. <3

Hatching:
Next, out of the eggs that I set, only one is making it to hatch. It is due tomorrow (9/30/24), and has pipped the internal air cell as of last night. This was probably the least successful hatch I've had in my life, but it's okay.
As for the case of the lone duckling, we are getting 3 mallard/buff X Saxony mixes! We will get those Tuesday, if hatching goes as planned.
A lady from the church bought a dozen eggs and decided to put them in her incubator, all of them are fertile. So I guess we will see what comes of that unexpected situation.

New hatching set:
I have a dozen eggs laid yesterday that will go in as soon as this duck hatches.

Feed & Shopping:
I bought 2 50lb bags of corn, and 1 50lb bag of duck feed from tractor supply. Also decided to go ahead and purchase some new duckling waterers and feeders while it's off season (they cost less now). I plan to keep hatching so I needed a good amount of feeders and waterers since they will be hatching out in groups (aka may not get along, so I need a backup plan for food and water).

I still need ideas on how to section off the side yard (where I will be putting the ducklings for a little bit) until I let them free-range.

So, change of plans, sadly. The duck had a malformed beak as well as inverted legs and in result, didn't hatch. We wont be purchasing the 3 ducks anymore.
