We have lice (white eggs sacks visible around the vent feathers) and scaley leg mites (leg scales raised, some abnormal growths) on our hens.

We are dipping the chickens feet in oil every night for 14 days for the scaley leg mites.

We didn't have any Sevin available locally, so I asked my Dad to pick us up some on a trip he made when he stopped at Walmart. He got the Sevin 5% powder for dusting the chickens and got Sevin Concentrate Liquid for doing the run.

I have read almost every post about Sevin on BYC and done a google search and read the instructions on the bottle and I cannot find the quantities to mix for spraying the coop.

The instructions say "1.5 ounces to a gallon makes a .26% strength". So to make a 5% spray, (I suck at math btw LOL), I would use 20 oz to a gallon of water to make a little stronger than 5%? That just seems like ALOT, the container is only 32 oz!

I know I can use the powder for the coop as well, but it is an old Old OLD rough board coop with more nooks and crannies than flat surfaces and I wanted to use a liquid spray to better get into all the spaces any creepy crawlies could be potentially hiding.

Has anyone ever used the Sevin liquid concentrate and if so, what are your mixing directions?

Thank you!

Put Sassyfras wood in the coop for the chickens to roost on. It should keep the lice away. We bought this product called Poultry all natural protector at tractor supply. You spray it on your chickens and its supposed to keep the bugs off of them. I haven't tried it yet, but you can go to tractor supply and see if you can find it. Hopefully it works for your chickens. :)

Thanks for the reply RoosterLover16! Once we have this infestation dealt with, I am going to be using a preventive protocol using more organic/natural products like wood ash, DE, etc.

Unfortunately we live fairly remotely and do not have immediate access to a TSC or livestock supply so all I have available to treat is the Sevins my Dad picked up for me on his way home.

I had read somewhere about a person using the Sevin concentrate - of course, I have been reading so much that I can't find it now! *frustrating*

I "think" they said they used 5 oz to a gallon and they that was on the stronger side. It says on the insert that for veggies to mix it 1.5 oz to a gallon and for fruits to mix 3 oz per gallon.

Since the dust is designed for fruits and veggies an works on chicken buggies, I think I will go with the 3 oz per gallon for a coop spray.

Sure wish I could have found that post as it is the ONLY time I have seen Sevin concentrate referenced for using as a coop spray. I would just "run down" and pick up the premixed spray, but that is a 2 hour drive one way LOL, so we are going to make do with what we have.

I go and buy sevin brand pesticide and use that. all you do is buy the liquid sevin and a squirt bottle. I generally use a 32oz squirt bottle. use the cap off of the sevin bottle to measure. In a 32oz squirt bottle put one and a half cap fulls of sevin in the squirt bottle and fill the rest up with water and mix it well. spray your chickens at the base of the tail feathers around the cloaca( butt ). also spray where there legs connect to the bird( similar to our arm pits ), and under there wings and your done. it takes one to two good sprays for each spot.
