On the subject of Pekin Bantams. These tiny balls of feather have no larger class of hen and are therefore a true bantam breed.Somehow our European fanciers took charge of these pure breed British stock and called them small Cochins because of the Cochins feathered feet and forward gate. They originated from China and from the Pekin Palace and brought back by mostly British army officers during what we call the Boxer up rise. We called them Pekin as that was where they came from. They are nothing what so ever to do with India where the Cochin hen comes from. I hope to have cleared the confusion up regards the identity of my favourite bird.I keep quite a few as garden decoration.
We have good eggs from the flocks and they roam free in a six acre landscaped garden housed in strong wood cabins purpose made with wire runs for wet days. They hate getting feet dirty so straw yards inside help keep feathering clean.I place sand trays inside and infect the warm sand with pest powders to help rid my beloved Pekins of lice. They sunbathe in the sand trays and clean themselves all over. Mine are happy souls who follow us around chirping away as we weed the rose borders and herbaceous areas. We do not allow them into the kitchen garden or green housing. I love them and we hope to increase as time goes by. Visitors call them the Chinese Army as they march across my lawns to find shade in the orchard or in heavy listing shrubs.
The Cockerels weight is around 32 ounces and his hens 26 to 28 ounces. I run two flocks and they run together as one massive swarm over the newly mowed lawns. Like a fire brand really against the lush green sward. The sun sinks in the northern skies and in the way of things all birds head for home and never make a mistake as to which hut is theirs. Calm and no trouble are Pekin Bantams and I would have no trouble recommending them to anyone who wants a quite life and a bit of joy. You have no need to give them acres of space as two square meters per bird is all they need so can be caged in an area suitable with water and clean bedding daily. They do love company so talk with them often they come to understand your one gentle person and accept you as theirs.
