These were all supposed to be sexed as pullets, but as they get larger there are some distinct differences. They were hatched on March 14th. I'm pretty sure I know, but I want more experienced chicken folks to take a look. We can't have roosters in the city limits.

Sorry for the quality of some of these, my husband usually takes all the pictures so I had to do my best with his camera!

Suspected roo:

Notice the waddles and larger comb? "His" barring is also much lighter/brighter than the other 2.

Suspected pullet#1:

Suspected pullet#2 (Henrietta):
She's the smallest and darkest of the 3. She's taken a long time to feather in comparison to the others.

I will probably keep them all until someone starts to crow! This is my first brood and I will be sad to give one of them up. :( On another note, I told my husband this morning that I believed one of the 3 Barred Rocks was a rooster and talked him into 1 or 2 more chicks "as a backup."

By all means, get more chicks now and you won't have to deal with new introductions with older hens...they are nasty buggers, picking on newbies LOL!

As for the roo, which I am very sure of, because of the lighter and whiter patterns. And his comb is a bit bigger than the girls. Does he have any spur nubs? That would be another indicator of a roo besides color, comb/wattle sizes and buds.

All chickens have spur nubs, pullets and roo's The reason I said keep him, is because I had a chicks that looked JUST like that, and he turned into she.

I just wanted to update this thread to help any others out there that were trying to figure out if their Barred Rocks were a cockerel or a pullet. "Lucy" crowed yesterday! I've known for sure that Lucy was a roo for awhile now. The waddle and comb development and bright white barring are a definite giveaway.

Here is Lucy Roo crowing first thing in the morning:
