This is talking about temperature changing broiler sex organs if I read it right.

Ok, read it now. I'm not convinced.

There are errors in the numbers, e.g. they say p.7 "Conversely, standard incubation temperatures (35.9 ◦C) and increasing temperatures (37.0 ◦C) in our study resulted in 44% and 56% of males, respectively." But on p.3 we were told that "Group 1 used a temperature below the standard for incubation (36.0 ± 0.02 ◦C), group 2 was maintained at the standard incubator temperature (37.7 ± 0.01 ◦C) and served as the control group, and Group 3 used a temperature above the standard for incubation (38.0 ± 0.02 ◦C). The typical incubation temperature for Korat chicken eggs is 37.7 ◦C."

Errors apart, the 'high' temperature was (assuming these numbers were correct of course) a mere 0.3 degrees above the control group, whereas the 'low' temperature was over 1.5 degrees below. Bad experimental design.

And then there's no discussion at all of intersexuality in animals (any animal would do for this purpose; "Intersexuality can occur due to both genetic and environmental factors[4] and has been reported in mammals, fishes, nematodes, and crustaceans." Wikipedia). So it's a no from me.

While not relevant to this thread there are some people here I know who enjoyed the pictures and stories from the tribes in Catalonia. I had an email from one of the smallholding owners yeaterday informing me that all the chickens at the small holding are now dead. The last hen got killed by a predator and her rooster which from the information I have was most likely Treacle had to be put down because he stopped eating and drinking after the last hens death.
I doubt I'll ever know any more. The person who sent me the email is the most contemptible person I have had the misfortune of knowing and nothing they write can be fully believed so any further information is unlikely.

How some 25 healthiest, breeding chickens can have been wiped out in around four years doesn't bear thinking about.

I wondered a few times how your health is nowadays. Did the rash end completely by now or do you still have some pain from the shingles? Are there any visible scars left?
The shingles is still there. It flares up from time to time. Yes there are still visible scars.

That makes a statement that you need to take care of the field chickens until they die :hugs .

A big and probably unrealistic part of me hopes that some of them just went feral and are hiding and thriving in the trees and undergrowth.
:hugs
