Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Fret is the only chicken that C, without any doubt, bought with her own money so despite what I may think about C, they have the final word on what to do about Fret. C, says she will euthanize Fret this weekend.
This is absolute crap 💩 . She lost any claim on Fret after handing over the care into your hands.

But I do understand if Fret’s life became very miserable you don’t mind if C will do the deed to euthanise. If she acts on your judgement this is probably the best.

It seems Ini mini is often resting, looking tired and miserable.

Today I gave her a little left over from my yoghurt with orange juice. The other chickens wanted to share (take over) but she pecked the other monsters to back off. Still in charge as oldest of the flock. And very active too from time to time.

I lost Tamar this morning, found her deceased in the nesting box. She had a wing injury that I'd been treating, no sign of infection.

Here she is last year, sitting on eggs, turn sound up:

She eventually hatched/brooded two chicks.
I’m so sorry! I thought she was going to be fine! 💔 :hugs

So many losses!

Much as I would love Fret to pull through I completely trust your judgement. Fret obviously is an unhappy hen and, as she was bought by C then it is for them to decide.
Fret was named, loved, got to be a proper chicken as much as has been possible under your care including raising chicks and having a rooster to hide under when it got a bit much (or for whatever reason she stuck her head under Henry’s butt).

I, for one have learned so much from these chickens and Fret along with Matilda, Lima, Carbon and Henry will be remembered and missed by many.

This seems inadequate but ….. :hugs :hugs :hugs
I have often hoped that there is some worth, not just for me as a dairy, but for others to see the day to day reality of chicken keeping, albeit under rather odd circumstances.
Once the coop was changed and the auto pop door fitted the conditions at the field are not so dissimilar to many backyard chickens allowed to range for a limited number of hours a day. The field lot, when out ranging, possibly have a better environment, better forage and more space than many backyard chickens so perhaps such keepers can learn something from the thread.
