Mite-check assist. All clear!

This one is hilarious. Perfect for the quote submission! :lau:gig

the wikipedia entry I linked to says "it has a wide range of hosts including several species of wild birds and mammals, including humans."
And interestingly, prevention options are listed as
  • Heating the henhouse to temperatures above 55 °C (131 °F).
  • Regular washing down of the housing system.
  • Treatment of the walls and floors with silica dust or carbolineum prior to introduction of the new hens.[13]
which echoes the blowtorch, jet wash and DE options we'd got to on our own :D
I know heating and washing to address a mite problem. Lots of work as a prevention because it should be applied every 7-10 day to prevent eggs to develop into adult mites.

The 3th option is meant for prevention. But Im not sure how effective /poisonous they are. For mites and chickens. Some people use grease which seems to be effective too.
DE works well for me if applied on every surface, in every crack and on the roost and joints too.

I would say: don’t bet on one horse and monitor a few times a week to prevent an outburst. Which is easy with ribbed paper rolls.

Oil baths at the end of the roost seem to work well too if all your hens roost. I add DE (mixed in a thin layer of sand ) under & through the shavings in the nest-boxes as well to prevent an infestation at the broodies and chicks residence as wel (since last year).

PS. Since last year I use special herbs in the food and water that makes the blood unattractive for red mites.
