Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

a tip I learned a few years ago and that I've found has big impact for small additional step is to soak the dried fruit overnight before using it, in cold tea (fruit teas work especially well for this), +/- alcohol, so that when it goes into the cake batter it is plump and soft not hard and wrinkly.
I've addressed the dryness problem with alcohol soaks in the past. I don't do fruit teas.:D

I could be mistaken but it looks like Tull's comb and wattles are getting a deeper shade of red. Time to tune up the nest boxes I think. I haven't seen her take any interest in the nests yet apart from a recent interest on her part in getting into the rosemarry bush seen in the above pictures.

A couple of hours today. Chilly (it's going to get colder apparently) with some very light drizzle.
I read about other peoples chickens out and about in below freezing temperatures but this lot are obviously a bunch of wimps because as soon as it gets to single figures they head for the coop extension. Maybe it's the damp, maybe the wind, but cold weather chickens they are not.View attachment 3989883View attachment 3989884View attachment 3989885View attachment 3989886View attachment 3989887View attachment 3989888View attachment 3989889
Your photography has been taken up a notch lately, particularly the angles and composition. Fantastic portraits of all the youngers here. The photo of Miss Mow is a wall hanger, with the soft lighting and all the textures.

Our Speckled Sussex appear indifferent to cold. We'll see if they're as cavalier as they age, but their attitude so far has been adventure above all else, from chasing bears to foraging in driving rain and snow 🙄

The others all seek out sunny spots during the day and squish their bums against radiant heaters by night.

I took some decent pictures in Catalonia but the light and of course the scenery was very different. Mostly I take snaps as reminders of what went on for what is mainly a diary (this thread).

I wouldn't make it through -50C never mind the chickens!
*I* barely did! The cats & dog water bowl froze over. INSIDE! I spent two days bundled into my bed, wearing layers of winter clothing (including my coat) with the dog under the blankets for extra warmth!
