Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Methinx some tax is due for hedge talk (although that was all motivated by making cover and forage for chickens, so deserving of some kind of discount, surely?)

this is how the reseeding of the area flooded by the burst main is going... :th

It's all fine. I'm just mentioning it for new contributors who may not understand the tax system.:) The thread is on the long side now and I can't blame anyone for not wanting to wade through all the pages.:D

Oh my, I needed that laugh!!!

(I mean the green wall closest to the camera. The tall stuff behind is growing on the bank dropping away behind, and was left to provide some shelter this year while the relaid hedge gets established. That stuff at the back will be brought down next year.)
Hello, resident tree-hugger here. 😁

Doesn’t the “stuff at the back” help provide bank stabilization? One of the reasons (Hurricane) Helene caused such devastation here in the inland mountains was because of flash flooding that tore down stream banks whose trees and other deep-rooted plants had been cleared for agriculture, building, and “tidiness.”

And of course, the taller (compared to hedgerow) trees provide different habitat that might be needed to support additional niches.*

*Niches refer to the role that different organisms play in a local habitat. One way to think of this is bird species who prefer to nest low vs. those who nest partway up vs. those who nest high. Why yes, I’m preparing for semester final exams. 🤓

Over the last week I've been integrating my birds together. Buffy here is elderly (6 ish) and not laying eggs. She will peck a chick if it's too close but she doesn't chase. Marble the rooster is content to watch them, but he must be happier because he is crowing now. :)
I have these two adult birds for a while longer, and I hope they will teach the youngsters the way of the chicken before they head off to their homes.

They got straw tossed down in the runs yesterday since the spring rains have made the dirt turn to mud and then compact down. I need to make my grass/clover growing stations so they can get some grazing in.

Well obviously the grass seed was meant for the chickens! Anything new is like a magnet unless it’s something scary :D

Aberglasny blends in beautifully & has stunning marking to her feathers.

Must try and get pics of the chickens jumping for gooseberries which are only 1/4” long but newly visible :th
