Hi,

I had 2 dozen eggs posted from a breeder. They arrived the next day after posting and did not travel far. They arrived yesterday and I was in shock. I had paid $40 for shipping which is the norm for the eggsafe cartons and postage so I didn’t think twice and $200 for the eggs. They arrived in a cardboard box with tin foil on the top and bottom. The eggs were wrapped individually in toilet paper and were all sitting in a heap with a huge amount of dead space with nothing else to stop them smashing around.

On opening the box there was an egg immediately smashed on the top of the pile. I carefully unwrapped them and several are broken. On candling several have micro fractures. The air sac is moving around on multiple and the yolk looks broken or not intact on most. There even appears to be air bubbles in several of them.

I am going to add some photos. Can anyone tell what’s going on in the candled eggs pictured?

Do you think I am within my rights to ask the breeder to refund some of the money?

Do you think any of these could hatch?

Thanks

That is the worst packing job I've ever seen! I'd definitely contact the seller asap and send them the pics

Thanks. I contacted the seller. They want me to incubate to 7 days then update them. There are air bubbles in most which I assume is a ruptured air sac? Multiple have broken yolks and several have slipped air sacs. There is only 1 egg that looks normal. They did not acknowledge any issues with their packing even though I commented on it. I will be surprised if any grow.

Wow! Where did you order these from? Was it a site like ebay? If any of the wonky eggs do start to develop they will probably quit early.

No, a show quality silkie breeder that is only about an hour from me. They sell some of the most expensive eggs for this breed so to say I am shocked is an understatement.
That's just crazy that someone who is supposed to be high quality would represent themselves in such a poor way! They should show pride in what they are doing! I would never treat my English Orpington eggs like that!

Is it possible to drive to pick up the eggs ? If that is an option I would do that if you end up getting more eggs from them

I was going to do that. I waited the 7 days and incubated them like she asked me to even though I could see all were damaged on candling except 1. On day 7 I had 2 growing, 2 that had quit and nothing else developed at all. She was going to give me 12 ‘free’ as she put it and she would pay for postage. I kindly explained that I believe the packaging was the issue and asked for 22 eggs to be replaced out of the 24 eggs I paid for and that I would pick them up as I didn’t feel comfortable having them posted again. She never said no and messaged a few things so I assumed that was ok.

I was supposed to drive out tomorrow and she said I could come anytime and she would leave the carton in the letterbox. I then asked how many eggs she was leaving and she said 12. I explained again that I would like at least 22 as I paid for 24 and I paid $40 for postage and suitable packaging and I felt her packaging was inadequate (postage only cost her $22.75 plus the 2 pieces of tin foil and toilet paper she used).

Well, she is not having a bar of it. Apparently there is nothing wrong with how she posted the eggs. The 30 other people she has posted to have had no issues and it’s only me and 3 others that have a problem. That I shouldn’t expect eggs I purchase to be fertile that that is apparently a risk you take. She seems to think it’s all about her and how she is losing money and she doesn’t even see I have lost $240. That is a huge amount of money for me and this was a huge treat for myself that has ended in nothing but stress and upset.

That’s what I think. She is defending her packing and apparently I am one of the only ones with an issue. I have 2 eggs that have survived her shipping out of 24 😥
