show quality speckled sussex ??

The baby chick photos are cute...BUT... the big culling desicions are not made until the chickens get bigger. How about we three try to get photos of our birds at around 26 weeks of age. We can post weights and pics so that we can compare what we were hatched from the various breeders...

If we mark our calenders, it would be good to compare them then. cowchick11, these photos you just posted, are the birds 26 weeks old in them?

I am randomly suggesting that because cowchick11's has stock from Tony that is already at that age. Mine will be there in 4 weeks...

Mrheinz77 has stock that will be reaching the 26 week point soon. He has...
1.) Orange Ribbons will be there in a week...
2.) Alexander's will be there in 8 weeks...
3.) Walt's will be there in 10 weeks

All these pics and weights will give us and others some data to compare.
I took the photos at 24 weeks and weighed them at 26 weeks. My roo is not doing well, had a bad call from my brother a little bit ago. I did check the pullets when we weighed them this weekend and they all had slatey colored fluff not salmon. I still can not believe the differences I can really see in the photos!

Also, my chicks were a mix of chipmunk and some light ones. At first I was worried that I had not gotten SS! I will have to look back at my earlier notes to see if I know who is who now. If not I will have to mark them when I order more this coming spring from Tony!

Dang, just noticed that Deanna OR is going to be at the Canby, OR swap at the end of the month! I will be there too. Too bad you don't have an extra SS cockerel for me!!! I'd take him at this point!

Cowchick...I am actually struggling with the decision to keep him. I am not sure if I want to add another breed to work on. I may be biting off more than I can chew. Lemme think on it some more.

Cowchick from the looks of your chicks I suspect someone must have made a cross to a light sussex or maybe a buff or red to put some size and type onto the speckled sussex. This is the approach I am taking and I am in my third year of this line. My speckled sussex that I originally purchased and almost all the other SS chicks I have seen in US are wild type chick down with stripe and eyeline. When I crossed SS to light sussex I got some solid colored chicks some wild type and some in between. The chick down doesn't seem to matter too much to what they turn out as adults as long as they are not yellow, which is almost always a white bird. I have speckled sussex, gold mille fleur and reds from this cross. You won't get any speckled sussex form this cross until the F2 generation.

Tonight I weighed my young birds; 22 week old SS from Meyers Hatchery. I kept the largest of seven cockrels; he weighs 6.75 lbs. the pullets weigh4.8 to 5 lbs. each. Hatchery birds, but much larger than last year's group from a different source. Mary

For informations sake , what source did you use last year. Just curious. I have a couple Meyers pullets and a couple Mcmurray hens.

My pair from Orange Ribbon have some growing to do. The pullet was 3.5 poumds and the cockerel was 4.5 pounds.

He's not feeling to peppy after an attitude adjustment.
