Sick young hen

[Splendid Hens]

Our 5mo old barred rock hen was sitting on the floor of the coop yesterday. She has yellow diarrhea and acts lethargic. Yesterday she could stand, today she can’t. We gave her a warm Epsom salt bath last night. She ate most of a mashed, boiled egg yolk mixed with probiotics and drank some water with poultry vitamins. She spent last night in a pet carrier with fresh straw. I cannot feel any swelling near abdomen; haven’t felt inside for an egg yet. Her breathing seemed labored last night and still is today. She’s alert, comb is red and normal. I tried to feel for an impacted crop, but I’m unsure exactly where to feel. She just wants to lay down. This morning there was a small bit of green runny poop in the straw. I’m not aware of any trauma. Any suggestions?

We did another warm Epsom salt bath and I checked for an egg, but there is none. Breathing is still labored and she won’t eat or drink. She just wants to sleep. I wish there was mor I could do for her.

Can you get some photos of her poop?

For the crop, feel the right side of her breast, if she's been eating you may feel food in there.

I'm not sure what's going on with her. She's pretty young, how long have you had her?
Trouble with an egg would be my first thought, but there's so many things that can go wrong.

Thanks for your reply. We’ve had her since April, came in the mail as a chick. I’ll go practice feeling the crop on my healthy hens so I’m better prepared next time. Thanks again
