Hi everyone. I'm trying to calculate a dosage using amoxitex powder. The specs say it contains 150mg amoxicillin and 100mg tylosin per gram. That's all well and good, but I need to know how much of each drug is in one teaspoon. I have a kitchen scale used for weighing little creatures, but it won't register weights of only a few grams. I've been searching online since yesterday trying to find this information to no avail. Can someone please help me out?

The only info I could find suggested that 1/4 tsp contains roughly 20mg of amoxicillin. This doesn't sound right to me - and furthermore I've only found one dubious source for the information so I hesitate.

So, the question is: how much amoxicillin (mg) is in one level tsp of amoxitex?

Will your scale weigh three tablespoons?

Hey, thanks for the quick response!!

I suppose it may work for three tablespoons. I will try that now. My fear is that it won't be accurate, and dosing an animal that weighs less than 200g doesn't leave a huge margin for error. I wish they would put this kind of information on the package!

Anyway, I will try that and report back. Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I have been driving myself crazy trying to find this info.

CRD indications:

  • Administer medicated drinking water for three days; however, medicated water may be administered for one to five days depending upon severity of infection. Treated chickens must consume enough medicated water to provide 50 mg per pound of body weight per day. Only medicated water should be available to the birds.
Turkeys:

  • Administer medicated drinking water for three days; however, medicated water may be administered for two to five days depending upon severity of infection. Treated turkeys must consume enough medicated water to provide 60 mg per pound of body weight per day. Only medicated water should be available to the birds.

Man you guys are awesome helpful! Sorry for the delay- I weighed out three tablespoons in a ziplock bag and it came out to 20g.

I'm actually medicating a young rat (too young for baytril, besides which her uri is mild and I don't want to bring out the big guns when little guns will suffice). She weighs 167grams. The dosage for rats for amoxicillin is 10mg/lb (though up to 50mg/lb can b administered in severe cases) and the dosage for tylosin is 4.5mg/lb - though I have seen up to 10mg/lb recommended, and I believe that like amoxicillin, tylosin is relatively safe allowing for bit of leeway? I would like to mix the powder with babyfood and give orally. I have syringes to administer (no needles of course).

I would like to stress that under any other circumstances I would take her to the vet. However we recently became homeless after our roof (in a rental home) collapsed. I think the resulting stress, what with moving between hotels and such, has triggered the infection. The ceiling fell in, destroying almost everything we own...which is why the $300 for an exotics vet is not possible. I have years of experience with rats, unfortunately familiar with URIs, and experience medicating them. I have a vet who will usually help me out with antibiotics for rats (he doesn't treat them, but I taught him about medicating them years ago) but I can't get to him right now due to our situation, so amoxitex is my only choice currently.

Just wanted to put that out there so you guys know the deal. Thanks again for being so quick and helpful!
