Soooo. Last night I was putting up my chickens when my dachshund went into a hole under the coop. The hole runs lengthen wise and could hear her barking like crazy, she wouldn't come out so I had my brother try to get her out. As we are going back and forth between the two holes on each side of the coop a terrible smell comes from the hole... SKUNK! Lucy(our dog) finally comes out smelling of skunk 🙄 . The coop is inside of my barn and this morning the whole barn still smells. How do I get the skunk out of there? I don't want to hurt it. I just want it to go away! Any ideas? Also this is what i used to wash Lucy

1/4 cup baking soda
1/8 cup hydrogen Peroxide
1 tablespoons dish soap
Mix together then lather on the victim (lol) and rinse! You may have to do it twice.

You need 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide though.

We keep it handy as there are skunks around here. Can you call your DNR for your area and see if they can help?

Your skunk has found a nice den for winter, and possibly chicken and eggs for dinner. And skunks are a high risk species carrying rabies, not a good thing. Hope your critters are up to date on their vaccine!
If your good dog hasn't discourages this skunk, scared it enough to leave on it's own, then seriously consider the live trap and shoot method of varmit elimination.
Don't trap and relocate!!! That just moves a trap wise animal to invade another farm.
And, fix your tunnels before disaster strikes.
There are people who will do critter elimination for a fee, that's another choice.
Also, look up your state laws about managing wildlife, call or look at your DNR site for help.

We used tomato juice to clean a skunked dog. As for the tunnel, either fill it with bagged concrete thinned very watery so it flows or stick a trouble light down both ends of the hole till the critter goes elsewhere.

I would say that you are likely better off convincing the skunk that it wants to move off on its on accord, as one has to be careful trapping a skunk. If you can convince it to move out, make sure that you prevent it from moving back in. If the skunk has not harmed your chickens I would not feel compelled to kill it. Another predator will only come in to fill its place, and the next one may attempt to prey on your animals. We have raccoons and opossums, snapping turtles and bears just that I have seen very close to the house. I am sure that we have skunks, fox, fisher and mink (seen on game cam) -- only the mink ever attacked the chickens. We upped our protection following that. Good luck.

Cover the live trap with a blanket so the skunk doesn't see you coming. If it doesn't see you it won't spray. Although if you shoot it, it may cut loose, so you'll want a blanket between you and the, er, bomb. Add tomato juice to your formula for washing the dog, it neutralizes the skunk spray. You can also add a little vinegar to it, that mixed with the baking soda will give you a fine batch of bubbles. (Don't get it in his eyes! ) Good luck!
