We are nearly to the point where we can purchase our flock. We are seeking information on where to buy our birds. I have seen California Hatcheries, Dare to Dream Farms, and Chickens Galore! We live in Rancho Cucamonga. Should we buy the birds in person or is having them shipped a good method? Dare to Dream Farms is in Santa Barbara which is about 2 hours away. Chickens Galore! is in Norco, which is only about 15 minutes away. DTD guarantees the genders but CG does not. Are there other places around that you would recommend? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Are you getting chicks? If so, it's best to either buy them at a feed store or hatchery. If you are buying adult birds then hatcheries are not the way to go. You'd have to do some looking in your area. We have a buy~sell~trade area here where you can ask for chickens in you area https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade

Once you get them, feel free to ask ANY questionsl we'd love to help.

Here's a few more links.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Mountain Peeps has left you with our Buy Sell and Trade section. Lots of breeders there. You can also stop by your state thread and chat with your chicken neighbors. Maybe they have some birds or know where you can get them....

Privett hatchery here in New Mexico is a very nice hatchery. All my birds come from there and I have never had an issue in the past.

Good luck and enjoy this new adventure!

Go pick them up and save the hardship on the birds

Welcome to BYC! I agree with gander007, if you're getting older birds, or if these places within driving distances have the breeds and genders of chicks you want. If not, I would recommend ordering your chicks from Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell, Idaho. They are smaller than the other three hatcheries from which I have ordered (Murray McMurray, Ideal Poultry, and Cackle Hatchery, and I was satisfied with all three of them), but I love Dunlap's service and birds. The folks at Dunlap are very friendly and helpful, and I have never lost a single chick in shipping (I can't say the same about the other three). Dunlap Hatcheries website is http://dunlaphatchery.net/ Wherever you decide to get your chicks from, good luck with your flock.

I think you should look around on the southern calif. thread first to see if any neighbors have chickens for you. You could see before you buy and not require shipping.
