I was reading another topic and saw about fly bait and soda for racoons.. Well the mouse poison blocks just dont seem to be doing the trick. They have gone through a pack of poison blocks and keep on eating two blocks per night and I have not found a single dead mouse and still see lots of them. I feel like I am just feeding them!!! What do Y'all think about soda and fly bait in a shallow pan for mice? Think that it will kill the mice as quick as it does Raccoons?

An old man told me of an old-timey rat "poison" that they used back in the olden days. He said to get a back of ready mix concrete and some corn meal or grits. Mix the concrete with the grits/corn meal and leave out for the mice to eat. When they ate the mixture, the concrete would set and kill the mouse.

(Honestly, as an animal lover, that sound like a cruel, slow death.)

I'm an animal lover to but I'm up to my ears in mice. I tried the plaster of paris and coco powder and they ate a whole cup of it. No dead mice. And this is in my tack room of my barn(next to the coop) so I can leave things out. I hate useing poison even though no other animals can get to it but the traps just are not catching enough of these guys!!

Edit: Realised I forgot something so....Thank you by the way!!!

the soda of death was from me. I dont think it would work for mice. but the blue streak fly bait is granular, and soooooo toxic. Maybe try mixing some of the granules peanut butter. The fly bait is sweet, usually has sugar in it in fact. mice seem to love peanut butter. I think that would work well. I would just be careful if you have kitties. if they eat the mice that are eating the poison(even decon) it can kill them too. I lost a kitten to a mouse full of decon. it was awful to witness too, and happened on a holiday wknd. kitty got a bullet cuz we couldnt watch her suffer, and we also couldnt justify paying $300 for the emergency vet to put her to sleep. At least the bullet was instant. poor kitten.

Keep in mind the cement/cocoa or plaster or whtever takes a little bit to work, but it does work. That said, it may take a day or 2, and you may never find bodies

every coon we killed w/deadly soda was dead within a few yards of the pie tin.

Give it a shot. Peanut butter of death?

Also, if you read the back of decon-type poison, it says you MAY start to see dead mice in a WEEK. Decon is not a quick death. And the mice may be dying somewhere else.
The way decon works (sorry for all you animal lovers that even love the mice) it makes their blood unable to clot if they eat enough of it. Then it makes them thirsty. After they drink and drink tons of water, their blood thins so much that they essentially die of internal bleeding. It can take several days for this cycle to complete, and the mouse to actually die. Therefore, they may be dying elsewhere. In the walls, in the loft, in the yard,in the hay bales, in their nests...who knows. I have used decon under protest in the past. I have NEVER found a dead mouse in the vicinity of the decon tray.

You could also try the battery operated mouse traps. They work GREAT!!! You can get them at Home Depot or any other store like that. They work on double A batteries and the package claims that one set of batteries will kill 50 mice before changing them. I had a HUGE mouse problem in a small plastic shed I used as a tack room. The snap traps are garbage, they would just eat the peanutbutter and get away. I didn't want to use poison because I was worried about other animals eating the dead mice and dying. I had two traps in an 8X10 shed and the first week I think I killed over 20 mice. (I think they were nesting under the shed). They are really easy to use and reset. Just use peanut butter, they walk into the trap and get zapped! There is an LED indicator when you have a "body" inside. I would just dump the carcass out away from the shed and the roadrunners would gobble them up!

They are relatively inexpensive and you can use them over and over and over again. GOOD LUCK!

Here is some stuff I used to get rid of the mice in the barn I manage, it was two or three years ago but it took only DAYS to rid of all the mice, before this we were using a different product that the mice would eat and just poop out.

Hombre Rodenticide Mini Blocks

Or if you don't like poison, try the old pail of water with a pop can trap. You just take a pop can and punch a hole in the center of the top and bottom of the can and run a stiff wire through the holes, then you take a pail with 2-4" of water and lay the wire over the top so the can can spin when a mouse tries to step on it, smear some PB on it and lay a stick as a ramp up to the top of the pail leaving a gap that the mice have to cross to get to the can. When they go up the ramp and try to jump over to the can the can rolls and they land in the water and drown. This is a trap that doesn't stop catching, for winter just add some anti-freeze to the water.

My old roommate made a water pail mouse "trap"
I teased him about it - remember the board game "mouse trap"
His was a little different than the one described here, but it worked well
Simplicity is amazing sometimes
what you can concoct on your own sometimes is just as good if not better than some crap you can buy that doesnt always work like we expect
