Hi all,

I’ve had chickens for years but this is my first time encountering a crop issue. Noticed my mixed barred rock hen, 2 yrs old, is usually the most active in the bunch. I noticed her staying in the coop two days ago and thought she was broody, but in the afternoon she came out and there were no eggs where she had been sitting. Yesterday, she exited the enclosure with the flock but I noticed she wasn’t grazing, just standing under a shrub.

When it was time to go home she didn’t follow the flock. I noticed she was stretching her neck and moving it to the right side. And her crop looked a bit swollen. When I caught her and felt her crop it was quite squishy and she expelled yellow liquid from her mouth. A quick search through the forums made me think she must have at least sour crop maybe impacted because of her neck movements. We put her in crate in a separate indoor area overnight with only water.

This morning, it looks like she may have pooed a bit of grey but mostly white. When she tried to drink under my observation she continued to spew yellow. I massaged her crop and she made some sneezing noises and spit up a bunch. It seemed like the neck spasms subsided after I did this a few times. She’s on her feet but she seems to be falling asleep standing up, closing her eyes and making soft noises. I’ve left her alone now with just water though I’m not sure if she can drink it. Hoping for some advice, I’m pretty worried about her.

My mom took the chicken to her vet there was no yeast and very little bacteria. So she gave her a reglan shot and antibiotics… she said it could be mareks disease or a broken egg? it seems like she doesn’t know what she’s talking about? The chicken is standing and does not show any signs of straining for an egg…

if there’s crop impaction she won’t poop she will only poop that looks small and amount of poop will be decrease as well as size

sour crop or slow crop in early stages can be treated with strong Gut Enzymes design for dog

also slow crop in beginning can be treated with Fennel Tea (tried and use it in past with good results)
