Sponges for coyotes

There are usually about 200 burros up for adoption at the BLM in Canon City, Colo Prison at any one time....

There are also other corrals in other states to get them. They also have an internet adoption, and they did have free delivery within 150 miles, but I dont know if they still do that.

All of the above methods do not put your livestock/pets/and local wildlife in danger like poisons and sponges do.

2. I would not use a guardian dog that stays with the livestock, that is why we have donkeys and llamas. We have sold 100's of llamas and donkeys as guards, they do work great. However the coyote population has exploded here. In my experience livestock guard dogs quit after a few years, while a llama or donkey will guard for it's lifetime.

3. Where would you suggest putting bitter apple to deter a coyote? these are not city coyotes! I think they would consider the bitter apple just a condiment!

Not sure that the sponge method works, but I do know that snares placed by someone skilled in their use are extremely effective. Also a team of predator callers (until the coyotes become educated) can help reduce the popuation. Good luck at reducing the population whatever methods you use.

I believe that rice would work the same way as a sponge. I believe you could just put a bucket full of uncooked rice in with some kind of meat gravy or something the coyotes eat it, it expand in their stomach and kills them. I am not recommending this but it may work.

I use leg traps. I set them up with an old piece of meet hanging about 3' in the air over it. I have caught numerous this way. Check the trap every morning before I leave for work. If there is one in the trap, pop them in the head with a .22.

How about setting up a coyote call and ambushing and shooting them over several weeks? I know this has worked well for others with large areas of land such as you have. Other than that, poisoning, traps, or snaring seem to be your best bets. The sponges do not work very effectively. I know a dog that swallowed a baseball sized nerf ball and it didn't kill her till 11 years later, the nerf ball was larger than a kitchen sponge on a smaller animal that a coyote.....

Randy your best bet traps....i know you have trapped many smaller predators, if you can the live traps with live bait works best...you know a cage one inside the trap. Myself i would be using all type of traps, snares, and yes night hunting them also.
