I like coarse wood chips. I get them for free at my local Town highway department.what is the best substrate to use in your run?
I've used chopped straw, pine shavings and flake straw. I like the densely packed flake straw the best because it's harder for them to kick it out of the nest boxes when they start scratching in it!what do you use in your nesting boxes?
Keeping the path to the nest boxes clean is key. If they come in with muddy feet and jump right up into the nest boxes they're going to get mud on their eggs. Poopy eggs can sometimes happen when the egg is being laid or by somebody sleeping in the nest box overnight.what do you find to best keep the eggs clean from poop preserving the bloom without having to wash them and then refrigerate them immediately?
I use wood chips/mulch, it looks good, smells good and absorbent. It does well even when it gets wet. Lasts a long time. I use it in the nest boxes as well. So, I do have some questions.
1) what is the best substrate to use in your run? I have seen alot of people using coarse sand, like quikrete all purpose sand. I use to use pine shavings, but in the rain, it was hard to control the smell. I see there are also pine pellets or something that help dry up your run and is suppose to make it easier to clean. I will be putting my coop and run in the highest part of my yard, so that it gets better drainage to try to try to avoid mud. I also plan to cover my run this time with a solid roof. Last time I had that green garden fencing I believe, and the neighborhood cats destroyed it!! grr. I also struggled with mud last time as well. Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.
I also plan to let them out of the run while I am outside, so they are more free range and able to explore a bit more.
2) what do you use in your nesting boxes? I am seeing that some people are using a washable carpet grass like square. Some I have seen as a straw like square that you can peel layers off of.
3) what do you find to best keep the eggs clean from poop preserving the bloom without having to wash them and then refrigerate them immediately?
The best I can explain is that it is a mix between tennis and ping pong. Smaller court and shorter net than tennis courts. Played indoor or outdoor, with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes, can be played as doubles or singles. It is really fun. I am new to it, but I really enjoy playing.from Central Texas! What is pickle ball?
Thank you
