Straub’s search for colored eggs

I think the last of my Easter hatched chicks finally laid her first egg. Her sisters both started laying in August but this girl has been freeloading. She is home breed olive egger back cross and it looks like she got the blue egg gene! Her Name is Wednesday and she is the black one in the picture View attachment 4008992

Beautiful girl and beautiful egg.
Congrats...♥️

Oh, I didn't zoom in and must have missed the speckles.
Good eye....♥️

Such a lovely lady and egg. I see some speckles! Definitely worth the wait

Yes, I was so happy to see the speckles. It’s fairly light speckles and I did pose the egg with the “good” more speckled side up for the picture. She hatched from a non speckled egg so I guess I know that my rooster is capable of sending speckled genes on to his daughters.

That's awesome....if your selling eggs you should get some nice feedback on them speckled Olives. I'm very jealous....still no Olive or pullet eggs here yet.

Are you lighting the coop? I started lighting mine about a month ago when most of them were nearing the end of molt. The plan was pullet eggs in January hopefully full sized eggs sometime in February so I can start collecting for March hatching.

Before the lights I was down to 4 active layers average 2 eggs total a day. I started to lights waking them up a little earlier than sunrise. Then every few days I would go a little earlier than before. When I got them to 3 am, 14 total hours it was like a light switch went off in their brains and now I’m getting about a dozen eggs a day from the 21 girls.

No, not yet. I was looking to turn them on in January.
I need a timer.

You might be able to get a timer real cheap in the after Christmas sales. They practically give away suitable light sources, timers, and extension cords. The chickens won’t mind if the package says it’s for Christmas lighting.
That's a great idea. Thanks
Gives the wife another excuse to hit the 'Clearance' aisle.....
