Successful Quail Hatch

They're still on large pee pads, yes. I changed it out when I got home from work and again this morning, because they are messy little things. I'm considering putting pine shavings and/or some hamster bedding I have in one corner when I get home to see how they do. My one tiny little isn't growing at all and is still wobbly, and I don't want him to get stuck in it. The others are already bathing in their food so they'd probably appreciate something to play in. The hamster shavings I have are softer than wood, so I may start with that.
I hope the hamster shavings are that paper stuff and not cedar. Cedar is no good for birds. I think I'll try the same with a corner with shavings, that is a good idea. Thanks!

There is no cedar allowed in my house or animal pens. It's this:

My hamster has the hamster version of Downs, is half the size she should be, has a shortened lower jaw and no bottom teeth, and has a hard time getting around in shavings. But she loves this stuff, and it doesn't have dust like the shavings do. My adult quail and chickens get pine shavings, so I'll see how they do with the hamster stuff while in the little brooder then switch to pine when I put them in their bigger brooder and/or before they start going outside.

Ahh, yes, we used care fresh when I worked at the parrot pet store. :) Good stuff.

First batch,be real careful with the waterer. They can get into the water and drown when they first hatch. After a week, you have to watch for them running UNDER the jug when you put it in the brooder. I squashed one .:( This hatch I'm using nipple waterers.

Yeah, i've had marbles in the waterer. Tried the bunny bottle waterer but it dripped too much for my tastes. Had the same problem with the vertical nipple waterers. I'l probably look for the horizontal cup waterers posted earlier in the thread for when I put them in their hutch in a few weeks. While they are on the patio Ill probably just change out their water several times a day.
