Hey all,

Just a lil announcement mostly for me to decompress. Found one of my ladies deceased this afternoon after I stopped in to top off their water and feed. It was unexpected as these things usually are. My ladies started their molt pretty early in MN towards the end of this summer (that's when they stopped laying too). Kupo seemed otherwise fine, I last noticed her on Friday when I poked my head in to say hello.
Her body was found underneath a few of their little roosting bars in their coop in the garage and at first I wondered if she got stuck underneath them and died but I think she probably passed in her sleep and fell underneath them (?). Her eyes and mouth are closed so it seemed like she didn't struggle or suffer.

I will call my local clinic and university tomorrow to check on necropsy prices this week but am worried about my remaining two girls. Kupo was our most ill chick when I was raising them but she is barely 4 so this was pretty unexpected. The other two seem as happy as ever and are even sun and dirt bathing in the sun even in the chill.

Only thing I could find on her was a dirty butt but not super awful or out of the ordinary. I'll let you know what the necropsy shows, I feel awful but I know there's nothing I could have done/known about before hand. They have water, food (finally figured out the mouse problem) and their indoor area for sleeping is comfortable and warm. This is my first flock. Attached is one of my last pictures of her when they were carving their pumpkins a few months ago (she's the white one).

After doing some research, (she was an Amberlink) I realized that their life span is pretty short and I had no idea. She would have been 4 in April and others are reporting losing their Amberlinks around this time too. I may not necropsy now knowing that. Fingers crossed still my remaining ladies will be OK, especially until I can get them another sister next year.

Sorry for your loss. I was about to say that layer hybrids often die in the 3-4 year age range. It’s on the rarer side for them to live to 5+ (not impossible just rare).
